Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet (the Acclaimed SCD Diet)  * Highly Recommended
by Elaine Gloria Gottschall, Patricia Wilson (Illustrator), Marilyn  Jones (Illustrator)
Desciption:  (Review): Excellent results - A LIFESAVER!,  September 19, 1999
Reviewer: C.D. (v_dickson@bc.sympatico.ca) from BC, Canada )
I am a 76 year old woman that has suffered with IBS for years which led to UC. This last year my condition of UC got worse and worse with bleeding, diarrhea, etc. I was getting weaker and weaker, homebound with no ability to do inside and outside chores. I had a sigmoidoscopy and a colonoscopy, and all doctors could do was tell me what my symptoms were. They gave me medications that were of no help at all; in fact they made me worse. I was given Elaine Gottschall's book, "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." I stuck with the instructions and within only a few days, much to my amazement, the bleeding and diarrhea stopped! I've been on this diet for 5 months, following it faithfully and feeling wonderful. All symptoms have disappeared! I am
a new person with energy as I never had before. I have also lost 17 lbs, now a small woman, stabilized at 120 lbs since starting this diet. I have been able to expand my meal varieties on my own and have been able to make some delicious dishes. Now, my question is, when can I go back to a regular diet of eating carbohydrates and  sugars (in moderation, of course) - especially concerning going to restaurants and friends' homes for meals? Also, can I use balsamic vinegar on my salad?

The Culinary Couple's Creative Colitis Cookbook
by Denise Weale, Ross Weale
Stephen Holland, M.D.
Description: Stephen Holland, M.D. is a gastroenterologist on the faculty at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. He is an assistant professor of medicine and an assistant professor of clinical pharmacology in the department of Biomedical and Therapeutic Sciences at the medical school. His research and clinical interest is in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, that is, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. He is interested in clinical studies in patients with Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis.

I recently had a chance to review a short cookbook for people with active UC. Written by Denise and Ross Weale, it is a pocket size cookbook with 100 recipes of low fiber non-dairy recipes. Simple in design and concept, with a cute cover, it is a nicely done book. The strength of it is that there are a variety of recipes, so that it really looks like someone with digestive disease can survive. It is organized as breakfast, bread, soups and sauces, side dishes, pizza, and main course. In the main course part are Grilled chicken burrito, oriental potstickers, lemon chicken, pot roast, shepherd's pie, veal and potato stew, and many more. It is obvious that the authors have put in a variety of foods and styles of cooking. The strength of the cookbook is that is low fiber and milk free, which can be a benefit for symptoms during a flare. Also, the sheer variety of recipes may make the diet during a flare more enjoyable than when one is on one's regular diet between attacks. It is not a book that makes any claims on keeping colitis away. Anyway, the recipes are all doable, so check it out.

Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Fact Book
by Peter A. Banks (Editor), National Foundation for Ileitis and Colitis, Daniel H. Present (Editor)
Description: (Review): A must have book for anyone suffering from these diseases, June 2, 2001.  Reviewer: lycia77 (see more about me) from Orange, MA United States.

Six months ago I was faced with the reality that I had Crohn's Disease. At that point I wanted to get my hands on as much reading material as I could on the subject (because when you are sick about all you can do is sit and read anyway). Out of all the books I have read on the subject I can honestly say that this book is one of the best overall books on the subject.

This book is devided in three major sections. The first part is about The Nature of the disease. In this section the book discusses basic definitions, who gets the diseases, what causes them, how it is diagnosed, and systemic manifestations.

The next section is about Treating the Diseases. This section covers medications and their side effects, nutritional complications, surgery, and the threat of cancer.

The last section covers Living with the Diseases. This talks about diseases in children, pregnancy, older people, emotions, hospitalization, life insurance and medical insurance, what to do if you become disabled.

I recommend this book for anyone who suffers with either of these diseases. This book is a fantastic handbook/reference book for people who are sick with these illnesses. It has helped me understand my Crohn's disease better then I ever thought possible. I wish you all the best!!

People Not Patients: A Source Book for Living With Inflammatory Bowel Disease
by Penny Steiner-Grossman
Description:  The only IBD Book you NEED to have, June 30, 2000. Reviewer: Courtney Lewis from Groton MA USA Banks, Present and Steiner-Grossman have produced what I think is the best book on Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the market. Once again endorsed by the CCFA (an indicator of quality), this book is extremely well written and definitely the best laid out book on the market. It's always been a pet peeve of mine that IBD books never seem to have any good pictures or illustrations and this book has a plethora of both. The information is still your standard IBD stuff - overview of the diseases, medical/surgical treatment, emotional issues, IBD in children, in pregnancy, etc. - but it is easy to read and very accessible in attitude. If you have to choose just one IBD book, I'd recommend this one.

Understanding Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
by Jon Zonderman, Ronald S. MD Vender, Bernardo Bertolucci
Description: Crohn patient Zonderman and Vender, his gastroenterologist, base their presentation of the medical and psychological aspects of two inflammatory bowel diseases on solid medical evidence. Early diagnosis and treatment are vital to successfully managing both diseases, so Zonderman and Vender discuss the many conditions that can mimic those two and show how the differential diagnosis process works. A second opinion is  no insult to the diagnosing physician, they stress, and  often helps. After describing how the digestive system functions, they show how it can go wrong. They deal with related medical conditions and how Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis can affect persons of different ages differently. Treatment can involve careful dieting (beware of  "miracle" diets, though) and medical and surgical procedures. Awareness of the mind-body connection and of alternative medicine also may prove helpful. The book concludes with accounts of current clinical and laboratory research.
