Email: cmpnys4@yahoo.com
Age: 46
Country: St Paul, Minnesota, USA
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: Hi! Well, here it is in a nutshell... I'm a 46 year old guy who had ulcerative colitis at 12, my first ileostomy surgery at 14, and a revision at 16 (still managed a VERY sexually active puberty!). Saved my life! Been snorkeling, skydiving, etc. Married twice and father of a 17 yo son (Lord, help me). After 25 years with no problems, tried a Koch pouch at 40. Almost killed me, and I had it taken down a year later. Left me with even less bowel and a more fluid output. Oh well... Now I just struggle with chronic kidney stones (when I collect enough I'm going to make a shake-can cat toy)! Questions? Let me know. And don't forget to live - it's way too short!

Name: Ruth
Email: rfm3333@aol.com
Age: 54
Country: Williamstown, New Jersey, USA
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: UC
More Info: I have had my ileostomy for 28 years. All is well and so glad that I am living a healthy life. Two days ago I was told that I need to have a hysterectomy due to two huge fibroids. The doctor is hesitant about doing the surgery due to the posibility of adhesions and other complications. I am happy that the doctor is concerned, but would prefer a doctor who has experience in this area. Right now we are obtaining information from the hospitals and surgeons about my past abdominal surgeries (ileostomy & gall bladder). Then we will consult with a surgeon to find out the best treatment. My doctor said that I may not be a good candidate for the hysterectomy and she may consider other treatment if necessary. Would love to know if anyone has been through this. Thanks for your reply.

More Info: I had the surgery 17 years ago after suffering from bad UC for a few years. Unfortunately I was unable to respond to the medication. I have for many years just dealt with the situation being an ostomist. I do not let on to people that I have an ileostomy. I have only just started to use the internet and have found that many people with stomas wish to communicate which has suprised me. I too would like to find new people to correspond with and share thoughts, views etc. I have found this site very interesting.

More Info: I had my Ileostomy six weeks ago. I had UC for four years and never had a long spell in remission. I had severe reactions to Dipentum, Imuran and Purinethol so surgery was my final hope. I was terrified at the thought of being cut open and an ostomate in the hospital who was a week over the same procedure, saved my sanity and my parents. She was a great support to me. I would loved to return the favour to someone else. I feel terrific and I've got my life back again after being so sick. Feel free to contact me for a chat.

Surgery: Ileostomy

More Info: Had Crohns since 1981 was misdiagnosed with ulcers, until I lost 100 lbs in a month. (This is better than Weight Watchers Lol) Had a resection in 95' to get off the corticalsteroids. At the time my surgeon said I would have a 20% chance per year of the Crohns coming back. Went on for five years and guess what? Almost to the day I get a chance to see my surgeon. From 2000-2002 I've spent a total of 13 times in for surgeries due to fistulitis and had another resection and the installment of an ileostomy. This is all new to me now. Trying to cope and be strong for others. Kind of feel ugly and embarrased by the whole ostomy thing. Any advice or email would be great. Loads of happiness to all.

Age: 41

Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: This is my second ileostomy, my first being with the pregnancy of my second child who is now 5. The first I received when it was discovered that I had a fistula right after finding out I was pregnant. I kept the bag for a yr and then was reversed even though the fistula had not closed. The second was done after the fistula began to enlarge and became more active. I was told that it was also temporary and that the fistula could be surgically fixed. That was in November 2001. Since then, the surgeon has said that there was too much disease to even perform the surgery to close the fistula, hence, the reversal is on hold. I feel tricked. The pain of the fistula was not unbearable. I only agreed for the chance of getting rid of the fistula once and for all. Not for the privilege of having a bag long term. Sorry for sounding so morose, but I'm not happy with this.

Age: 26
Country: Armagh, Northern Ireland
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: CD
More Info: Hi, I have had an ileostomy since I was 19 and on the 3rd June 2002 I am having surgery to have my rectum removed and my ileostomy changed to a colostomy.
Since my first operation I have always been mentally and physicaly able to cope, however I am so scared about having my rectum removed as I know nothing about what the surgery invloves or how I will feel after it.
I would very much appreciate if someone could assist by supplying me with information or just a friendly ear.
I would also like to say (Having read the other messages on this site) that for those women or men looking to date...it is no problem. I was single when I got my ileostomy and have had great relationships since and I am planning to get married in two years...I hope that offers some comfort because all osomates are special, beautiful and survivors! God Bless!

Name: Michelle
Email: jwmw@cablelan.net
Age: 34
Country: Canada
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: Cancer
More Info: I have Crohn's disease and have had several surgeries. I had a J pouch performed which was unsuccesful and had to go back to an ileostomy.
I desperately want to have a child. I am told that my only slim chance is through in vitro due to extensive adhesions and scarring. Is there anyone out there who has had several bowel surgeries and successful invitro and a healthy baby. I should also mention I've had a DVT which is also a concern for in vitro as the fertility drugs are likely to increase the risk. I'm 35 years old and running out of time. If there is anyone who can help me it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Name: Richard
Email: rallen@solve.net
Age: 57
Country: Missouri, USA
Surgery: Ileostomy
IBD: Cancer
More Info: Was very familiar with hospitals prior to the cancer 3 years ago. Had lower half of pelvis removed, one kidney, bladder, gall bladder, broken back (3 places, different times) crushed leg with steel tubes, fractured skull and 14 surguries to reconstruct problems from birth over 18 years. Am still very happy and optimistic, (I guess what doesn't kill you really DOES make you stronger). My only problem is I have so much scarring on my abdomen with deep creases I have trouble making an appliance last longer than 24 hours without leaking. Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated. As I am sure most of you know, they charge through the nose for appliances and using one a day gets to be very expensive.

More Info: I was diagnosed with UC when I was 10 (although I had it for a while before that, just my parents thought I was pretending about the stomach pain to get out of school), and I had my first surgery when I was 14 cause otherwise I was so sick the doctors said I would have died. Umm.... basically anything that could go wrong did go wrong - yes I had the internal bleeding, collapsed lung, peritonitis, anything & everything. Four surgeries later (the last was 4 years ago), and I am now really healthy and you know, I even know like my stomach scars - it makes more unique :) I would love to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me or ask me any questions about it.
