Email: annie5263@hotmail.com
Age: 38
Country: Australia
Surgery: Resection
IBD: Severe form of Endometriosis
More Info: I have just had a Total Abdominal Clearance which included having 1.5 feet of my large Bowel Removed. Three days post-op I was told they need to take me back to theatre for a Total Colectomy and formation of Ileostomy. It is now 8 weeks post-op and I can't find the courage to do it. I am totally housebound due to incontinence. Any-one got any words of wisdom? When first diagnosised the surgeons kept saying try anything to avoid a stoma. Now they say there is no choice. Is it that bad? What are the negatives?

Name: Christine
Email:CMaxw96186@aol.com
Country: California, USA
Surgery: Numerous resections and a colostomy
IBD: Diverticulitis
Age: 49
More Info: I recently underwent my 4th surgery for diverticulitis. I had my 1st colostomy when I was 41 due to a rupture of my colon from diverticulitis. It was reversed 10 months later. That didn't work too well.I had numerous attacks over the years and continued to lose large portions of my colon until I ultimately had about 2 feet remaining. This last surgery was initially to install an ileostomy, but the surgeon was unable to do so, as I had so many adhesions that my abdomen was "frozen". The adhesions had grown together. UGH! So, hence the colostomy and fistula. The fistula isn't too bad. Just drains and is a bit bothersome at times. It's amazing what people can adjust to!
