I used to have excoriation around the stoma where the skin becomes pinkish with light wounds. I have used karaya poweder to somehow treat it.
The other problem is that is has spread within the borders of the flange . What is the best way to treat excoriated skin. When the skin becomes pinkish, the flange easily looses it stick on the skin therefore having leakages.(As if this outer skin is usually wet and slippery)

I would think first is to get your skin as dry as possible. Then treat with cavilon skin prep or stoma powder blow off excess. And then I would use small eakin seal and then warm the flange on your bag with just your hand or hair dry on low setting. The main thing is to get the skin dry asap and have everything ready stat to put on. Once you get yor bag on hold it ib place for a few seconds and tear off the tape around you appliance.
Work as fast as possible. Hope this helps.

I have to hold my seal firmly in place for at least one minute (sometimes 3 minutes) to make sure the seal will hold. Just be sure all "weepy" areas are dry before applying the seal, as Teresa said.

Thanks Teresa and Kathy, (I have long been battling with excoriation. The weeping skin is always the point where the flange easily detaches. Thanks for the advise

i finally tried what you advised, I put powder on the skin and attached the flange with some paste. I thought it would detach but somehow I held it for some time until it sticked. When I changed the flange, I saw that the weeping skin has lessened. The suggestion worked fine.

Clean the peri stoma skin with only warm water & soft cloth. Dry it completey, even with hair drier on low heat if necessary then dab the weepy area or spots with stomahesive powder and spray with Cavilon no sting
skin prep., if necessary dap the wet spots left with more powder, and spray again, let it dry and place wafer over the area and hold it in place for at least a min. to let it stick. The weepy Irritated area is most always caused
by leakage, You may not be getting a good seal around the stoma.
You may want to try a Moldable Wafer by ConvaTec,
it eliminates the need for paste or seals because it "turtle necks"
to a snug seal around the stoma.
If you stoma is short or flush you may need the Convexity:

I clean the skin around the stoma and COMPLETELY DRY, then spray with 3M Cavilon
no sting Skin Prep. http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?66666UuZjcFSLXTtMxTXMXT_EVuQEcuZgVs 6EVs6E666666--
and dry again,Then apply Turbot Liquid Skin Tac adhesive on the wafer and on the skin around the stoma, let it dry at least one moment to become tacky, http://www.torbot.com/ecom/product/search/69/ ,
then place the wafer over the stoma and press it snug against the abdomen for at least another 2 min. to help it stick. Then I snap the 1" elastic belt into the loops on the pouch and adjust it to be snug, but not tight, to hold the appliance in place. I change every Sunday.
Good luck and be well,

When I had my colostomy I suffered from excoriation too, and it was so, so painful. I ended up using Aloe Vera on the skin (I have a plant but you can buy the gel in tubes/bottles). I applied the Aloe and allowed it to dry totally, it was so soothing. I then dusted the area with stomahesive powder. This combination worked for me and felt so good.
I hope your skin continues to improve.
Take care,

Hi Kathy I can gather from your coments your skin is in a bad condition, I know what I am going to write may seem a bit hard to grasp, Your Stomal Area needs to be healed before anything will adhere to it, The ONLY way that has PROVED to work is WARM WATER. YES WARM WATER, put yourself on the" Loo" or a Bathseat, and Slop WARM WATER all over the damaged skin, you will see the difference in a few seconds, just be careful to use a SOFT cloth, FIBRELLA is the best, wipe the area with WARM WATER until you see the Damaged skin falling off, DONT forget to be gentle, I will work Hundreds can vouch for me, I am not a Doctor or Nurse, just someone who had an ILEOSTOMY fitted by one of the Finest Surgeons In the NORTH SHORE HOSPITAL, Then left with a GIGGLY Stupid STN who made no attempt to assist me with the Allergy I had, (The Stomal area is very delicate) Just Slop the WARM WATER on and make sure your skin is dry, DO NOT USE ANY PROPRIETRY cleaning products, they ALL have ALCOHOL in them, thank God I found an STN who knew what she was doing, and in 9 years now I have been fantasHoping you will take my advice, MIKE ps not used this site before you can see me on the Guestlist, I am trying to find anyone From Victoria South Australia Western Australia and NSW for there experieces with there Ostomy Associations, sorry to have gone on for so long, all the best MIKE LOL
