Pregnancy With An Ostomy
I'm 27 years old and had an illeostomy for 6 years. I have two beautiful children; a girl and a boy ages 3 and 1. Both were born after my surgery. Everything went fine - both c-sections. No crohn's during pregnancy or even after my surgery. I did find it hard to find maternity clothes, since all the pants are switching to below the belly.

I was diagnosed with U/C when I was 14. At 19 (1999) I married my high school sweetheart and 9mths later I gave birth to my daughter. The pregnancy went terrific and I had no problems during the pregnancy. About 6 weeks after giving birth I had a flare up and was put on medication. In 2001 I had my son and that pregnancy and birth was trouble free also. Then when he was 6 weeks old my bowel perferated and I had emergancy surgery which I was given a perm Ileostomy. Im now 25 and am 34 weeks pregnant with my third. So far I have had no trouble with my stoma or appliance. I do however have to use a mirror to help with changes. When I was 30weeks I had a preterm labour scare but I have been told to rest up and things so far are looking good. The doctor wants me to try and last till about 36weeks. I had very very easy births with my last two children and delivered vaginally. My doctor doesn't seem to think I will have any trouble delivering vaginally with this baby. I will let you know how things go with my birth. By the way we know we are having a little boy. I cant wait to meet him.

I am a 39 year old living in Dublin, Ireland. Last year I suffered a short intense bout of Ulcerative Colitis (4 weeks) which resulted in me having a Total Colectomy. I was 12 weeks pregnant at time of surgery and obviously it was all a big shock and worry as to if the baby would survive. The surgery went well and I am pleased to say my healthy son, Andrew, was born naturally in 56 minutes on 23 January 2005 weighing 7lbs 8ozs! What a miracle. I am perfectly fine and feeling great. He is also perfect. I really was so very ill before I had the operation, it was the only solution and chance of saving me and my baby. They tried various steroids before giving me surgery as the steroids did not work. The pregnancy itself went very well considering. I was very nervous about the birth more than anything, as I did not know how the stoma would hold up, with it being so new. Well I didnt have any problems (and it had grown quite large with my stomach swelling). It has already gone down in size. There was no question of a c-section, although I did want one as I was afraid of tearing. As it was my second baby they reckoned I would deliver easily - which I did with no tears. If anyone wants to ask a question I would be happy to help if I can. I know i am very lucky and blessed with my baby.

I have had crohns since age 9, ileostomy since age 21. I am 41. Doctors told me I would never have an baby due to all the surgery, scar tissue, both tubes being blocked and a tilted cervix. Even the IVF doctors gave up, after 2 tries they told me to seek other methods of becoming a parent ie: adoption. 3 months after my 2nd try at IVF, I got pregnant on my own, it was a miracle. The pregnancy wasn't easy, however my stoma was fine. I contacted my ET, she put me in touch with someone who had 2 children while having a ostomy, she was so helpful!!! I was the first patient in my doctors practice to deliver with an ostomy, there were 12 doctors in the delivery room, I guess I was an experiment. I delivered my daughter by c-section, once they openned me up, they could not fiqure out how I got pregnant, as there was tremedous scar tissue and blockages. But in the end, I was able to become pregnant, my daughter is now 7 years old. Don't ever give up miracles do happen!!!

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 10 and had a permanent ileostomy since age 14 (1992). I had a stomal hernia in 2002 with what the docs called "mesh" put in my abdominal cavity to prevent further hernias. I had been married for 6 1/2 wonderful years when we decided to try to concieve. My uterus was tilted very badly (due to no rectum, the only place left for the uterus to go is back)! Was worried I wouldn't concieve at all. Started praying in August 2003 for an easy conception, no disappointments. We were going to start trying in Sept 2003. Lo and behold, our prayers were answered, not in September, but in August. I found out Sept 13 I was pregnant. No problems during pregnancy!!! The baby's head stayed very low at 27 weeks and my water broke at home at 36 weeks. I gave birth May 4th 2004 to a 7 lb 15 oz baby boy (vaginally). The delivery was pretty quick. I had a grade 2 episiotomy. No problems ileostomy wise except the nurses kept trying to give me the Standing order for all women there of milk of mag and a stool softener. I kindly refused it and told them why!! I breast fed for 5 months although I didn't produce a lot. Makes me wonder if that is not due to ileostomy absorbing more fluid than a normal woman. At any rate.....I loved being pregnant, enjoyed the experience of giving birth, and love being a mother. If anyone needs to talk or ask questions, email me at Bigbirdbaby@aol.com. I had plenty before I got pregnant!!!

I have had a colostomy for 5 years now at 30 years old. I am 17 weeks pregnant with no Crohns symptoms so far. I was wondering if it is better to have a c- section or natural birth and is there more of a risk for complications with the stoma or the crohns with a natural birth? I also just was in labor and delivery last week cause I had a lot of fluid coming out and they thought it was an infection but all tests came back negative and now they say it was a mucous plug. It is 4 days later and still a little coming out. Should I be concerned? I see the doc on Wednesday. The heartbeat was good and they did a fern test for water and it turned out negative and my cervix is still closed. I just am worried and curious on how it will be for the rest of my pregnancy and for the birth with this colostomy...Any advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way I have had CD for 21 years now, and multiple surgeries. But I am shocked that the CD was active before pregn anacy and stopped when I got pregnant and I haven't had morning sickness or anything. Thanks for your help and advice.

Don't know if my story counts or not. I had surgery during my pregnancy. I had UC for less than a year before I became very ill with it. I was on very high dose steroids for a while before I had an emergency sub-total colectomy in the 23rd week of my pregnancy.

I am 43years old with an Ileostomy due to Crohn's that I've had since I was 21 with many revisions. Tried to have a baby for 4 years. Finally in 2001 we had a gorgeous healthy baby girl 8lbs12oz. The pregnancy was bearable with some minor discomforts, and I had a C-section. She is an amazing Blessing, but I'm EXHAUSTED. I wish I could give my daughter a sibling but my age and strength is not allowing me to go through another pregnancy. Not to mention the scar tissue. I have issues of feeling guilt. I am also an only child and I survived. If I have another baby I feel like I would collapse! How do you people do it????? Having more than one? Am I the only one that feels this way? Not one person has said that they are tired and feeling weak. Oh Well.
